Parents helped second-grade students sell lemonade during their lunch periods to raise money for charity at Dobbins Elementary School Oct. 17.

Second-grade students in Karen DiVito and Stephanie Mateja’s classes learned the benefits of entrepreneurship during their lemonade sale at Dobbins Elementary School Oct. 17.
Students sold lemonade and cookies to their classmates throughout the day during lunch and donated 100 percent of the proceeds to the Rescue Mission for Thanksgiving dinners. The event not only taught children about what it takes to run a business, but also how to be charitable as well.
“We take this opportunity to have our lemonade and cookie sale to raise money for the Rescue Mission for Thanksgiving meals. It’s important for kids to learn about giving back that’s why we always do it closer to Thanksgiving. We also read the story “Lemonade for Sale” and then we talked about graphing sales. We’re actually having students graph and chart what’s being sold today,” DiVito said.
Students were excited as they assisted with lemonade sales from calculating revenue to customer service. They enjoyed the chance to share with their classmates and were proud of their accomplishments.
“Our students were so excited. The other students were just as excited to. I like to see them pull together and when we present the check to the Rescue Mission they are very proud of themselves,” DiVito said.
