Dawn and Kaleigh Maxwell signed copies of their book, “Ultimate Blood,” June 8 at Bradley’s Book Outlet in the Southern Park Mall.
The mother-daughter duo began writing the book when Kaleigh was in seventh grade and the book was released in October 2012.
“We both thought it would be a great way to spend some quality family time while having fun creating a supernatural story. We also knew that we didn’t want to just create a flat book. We both wanted ‘Ultimate Blood’ to come alive for the reader,” said Dawn.
Kaleigh talked about the experience writing with her mom.
“Working with my mom has been so much fun creating the characters and their personality. The time we spend together is more than just writing words on paper, it’s an important memory of how teenagers like myself can build a bond with a parent and make a dream come true,” said Kaleigh.
“Ultimate Blood” tells the story of Alex Somers who gets stuck in the middle of a battle between vampires and wookies.
Kaleigh created some of the artwork for the book.
“My inspiration for artwork came around five years ago when I started watching and drawing Japanese Magna,” said Kaleigh. “Since then I have been drawing manga and incorporated it into the characters in our novel.”
“Ultimate Blood” has received local and national recognition.
“We spent time with four actors from ‘The Walking Dead’ who are now all reading our novel. We also have Ted White, who played Jason in “Friday the 13th” movies, Naomi Grossman, who plays Pepper in ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’ and many other actors who are reading the book,” said Dawn. “We are very excited to announce that we have Ted Nicolaou, a director in Los Angeles, reading our novel for possibilities of a movie or TV series.”
In addition, “Ultimate Blood” is now in two high school reading programs for next year.
Dawn and Kaleigh are currently working on book two, which will be released in late Fall of 2013.
“Ultimate Blood” is available at Bradley’s Book Store in Southern Park Mall, Barnes and Noble, Books A Million, Amazon and the Apple Store. It is also available online for Kindle, Nook and iPad.
