The seventh- and eighth-grade band presented its spring concert April 30 in the auditorium of Poland Seminary High School. The concert featured songs from many different musical themes and levels. Jeff Hvizdos and Nick Olesko were the conductors for the evening’s performance. Olesko also conducts the Poland High School band.
The concert began with the seventh-grade portion of the show, as they played such songs as “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore, “Hypnotic Fireflies” by Brian Balmages and “Albemarie Fantasy” by Mark Williams. “Americans We” featured many patriotic tones and melodies, while “Hypnotic Fireflies” and “Albemarie Fantasy” were faster songs that contained a lighter and more fantastical feel.
The eighth-grade band performed “Symphony!” arranged by Douglas E. Wagner, “Harlequin Dance” by Erik Morales, “Highlights from ‘Brave’” arranged by Sean O’Loughlin and “Sabre and Spurs” by John Philip Sousa. The crowd favorite was “Highlights from ‘Brave,’” which showcased themes from the new Disney movie, “Brave.”
“My favorite part of middle school music is that you can see musicians starting to really come into their own,” said Hvizdos. “They have moved past the basic tunes, which are meant to teach them and help them form skills, and into real music.”
